FAQ: Lunasee for Bicyclces

Does the Lunasee system replace my current front and/or rear lights or reflective components?
No. People often think the Lunasee film is reflective. It is not. The film is made of state-of-the-art photo-luminescent material that glows when energized –  meaning it is visible without the direct light that reflective components require. For riding in low light conditions, bikes are typically required to have active front and rear lights, along with reflective components in the front, rear and sides. Lunasee adds active lighting to the sides of the bike –  to complement and enhance these existing components and improve conspicuity for cyclists. The system is not intended to replace any of the existing lights or reflective components.

Will I have to do a lot of upkeep with Lunasee?
Not at all. Depending on how frequently and what conditions you ride, you may find it necessary to wipe off the photo-luminescent film on the wheels. We recommend you wipe it clean periodically to ensure maximum effectiveness. The same applies to the LED pods. Keep them clean and free of dirt for maximum effectiveness.

Does this add a lot of weight to my bike?
Almost none. Since the system is powered by the same dynamo hub that powers your headlights, the only weight added by Lunasee is a few grams for the power controller and pods. The systems adds no additional resistance at all to the bike.

I don’t like a bunch of extra stuff attached to my bicycle. Does Lunasee add ugly attachments to my bike?
Nope. The entire external installation is just the special photo-luminescent film applied to the rims and four small LED pods. The magic is that this creates a 2 meter ring of light on each side of the wheel with only a single LED. In the daytime, Lunasee is nearly invisible, and the system adds little weight and no resistance to your ride.

Is there an extra switch I’ll have to remember to turn on an off?
Lunasee doesnt’ even have a switch. You just turn your headlights on, and your Lunasee system activates as well. Some bikes have a function that turns on automatically. If your bike has that, then Lunasee will be a part of it as well.

Does this mean I’ll have to only buy a special kind of tire or innertube?
It doesn’t. The only part of the Lunasee system that touches your wheel is the photo-luminescent tape that runs around the rim – it is not on the tire. This means you can ride any tire you like.

So I’ll have to buy a bunch of batteries for this?
No batteries. The current Lunasee system is designed for bikes with hub dynamos that power the lights. These bikes are common in many European countries.

I prefer a battery powered version. Is this available?
We are in the process of developing a battery version. Please let us know your interest in a battery version by contacting us. We will let you know when it is available.

I’ve seen glow-in-the-dark material before, and it’s pretty weak. Is this going to be visible?
Lunasee is using state-of-the art materials in the patented Lunasee system. This is much different than the material used in glow-in-the-dark toys. Check it out and you will see.

How can I get this on a bike I already own?
