FAQ: Lunasee for Motorcycles

Fitment (3)

Will the ASL 1000 work on my bike?

The ASL 1000 Kit comes with versatile mounting hardware that should work on popular makes and models that have dual swing arms. So if your bike has dual swing arms, you should be in good shape.  If you want to make sure, please review the Fitment information provided below or email us at techsupport@lunasee.com with your make and model.

If your bike has a single swing arm, then you may have difficulty mounting the LEDpod with the included hardware on the side of your rear wheel with no swing arm.  In this case, you may choose to purchase the one wheel kit (ASL-1000-1W) for installation on your front wheel only or you can contact us to see if there are any custom brackets available that will be suitable for your situation.  Or you may purchase the two wheel kit and create your own bracket that works for your bike.  Please see the following resources on the included mounting options and considerations that will help you confirm fitment for your bike:

  1. Watch the ASL 1000 Fitment Video.
  2. Download the ASL 1000 Fitment Guide.
  3. Take a look at your bike and ensure the 4 mounting options are suitable for your bike.

Will the ASL 1000 work on a trike?

The ASL-1000-1W kit is specifically for a one wheel application and is suitable for mounting on the front wheel of most trikes (refer to Fitment page for more information on mounting LEDpods on your front wheel). Due to the “open” nature of the rear wheels on a trike, there are no convenient mounting points to mount the necessary LEDs on the rear wheels without compromising aesthetics. As a result, we recommend a one wheel kit for application to the front wheel of the trike (the leading wheel is the most important for visibility). While Lunasee does not offer mounting hardware to mount the LEDpods for the rear wheels, you can of course purchase the ASL 1000 2 wheel kit and customize your own mounting solution for the rear, or work with your trike converter/dealer to develop an acceptable solution.

I have a single swing arm. Will it work? What are my options?

The standard mounting hardware included with the ASL-1000-2W (2 wheel kit) may not work for mounting the LEDpod on the side of the rear wheel with no swing arm (no convenient mounting point for our LEDpods). This depends on your bike and available mounting locations on the side with no swing arm. For example, while Gold Wings have a single swing arm, they do have saddle bags which provide convenient mounting locations for the LEDpods. However, other bikes with single swing arms may have no saddle bags and no convenient location to mount the LEDpod. So if you have a single swing arm, you have a few options:

  1. Check our Fitment Video and Guide and see if your bike has a convenient mounting location for the LEDpod on the side of the rear wheel with no swing arm. You may also email techsupport@lunasee.com and we can assist you in evaluating this. In some cases, the included hardware may work – while in others you may need a custom bracket provided by Lunasee. Or you may need to develop your own custom mounting solution. It just depends on the bike.
  2. If the side of your rear wheel with single swing arm is very “open” and there are no other convenient mounting points (like saddle bags), you can purchase the ASL-1000-1W (one wheel kit) and mount the ASL system on your front wheel only – the Active Side Lighting on your front wheel will still provide significant enhancement to your conspicuity. We have also had customers that purchase the 2 wheel kit, and mount the LEDs only on 3 sides.

Installation (5)

Can I use other glow material?

The components of the Lunasee system have been designed and selected for maximum performance and durability for this application.  In particular, this includes the high performance LERtape and high intensity LEDpods. Use of any non-Lunasee components will likely result in under or non-performance of the system and/or a significantly shorter product life.  While you may find other glow materials, most common materials may have one or more of the following problems:  a) it will degrade and fade with exposure to the sun (sometimes within as little as 30 days), b) the  adhesives are not automotive grade and will not last in outdoor environment, c) the material may not be flexible enough to apply in circular fashion without wrinkling or tearing, and d) will not glow very bright.  In short, use Lunasee LERtape and LEDpods for optimal performance and durability.  We know – we have used and tested a LOT of materials!

Can I install the wheel light kit myself?

Yes.  If you have reviewed the Fitment Guide and have determined the ASL 1000 will fit on your bike, you can purchase a kit and install it yourself.  Detailed installation instructions are included. If you are not comfortable installing lighting on your bike, we recommend you contact an authorized dealer to have the system professionally installed.  You can download the installation instructions from the support page.

How long does it take to install the kit?

This depends on your bike and your installation skills.  From our installation tests, install times have generally ranged from 2-5 hours, depending on the skillset of the person installing, and the type of bike.  For example, installation on a Gold Wing will likely take longer than on a typical sport bike.  We recommend purchasing the LERtape Applicator Tool to make the pin stripe application as easy as possible.  Our Fitment Video and Guide can help you asses installation, and you can of course always have the kit professionally installed by a shop.

Do I have to use the Controller?

Yes. The Controller regulates power to the LEDs and must be used. Connecting the LEDs directly to the battery power will damage the LEDs.

Can I use other LEDs?

Lunasee’s high intensity LEDpods have been specifically designed with the Lunasee Controller and LERtape to maximize performance and brightness of the LERtape during operation, and for durability.  This includes power regulation, intensity, beam focus and the spectrum of light to maximize excitation of the LERtape.  Using any other non-Lunasee LEDs will void the warranty on your system, and will likely result in under or non-performance of the system or the LEDs – including permanent damage to the components. Never plug non-Lunasee LEDs into the Lunasee Controller as it may damage the LEDs or the Controller. The placement of the LEDs is also very important — and Lunasee’s LEDpods are designed to work with the included bracket hardware for optimal positioning.  Always use Lunasee components for optimal performance and durability.

Maintenance and Care (4)

Will the LERtape pin stripe be damaged when changing tires?

As long as you apply the tape at least 1/8″ away from the edge of the rim, there should be no interference when removing your tires.  We always recommend notifying anyone removing your tires so they can take extra care when removing your tires.  In the event the pin stripe is damaged for any reason, you can purchase replacement LERtape from Lunasee.

Will the LEDs interfere with removing the tires/wheels?

Depending on your bike and the selected bracket mounting, you may need to loosen the brackets and move them out of the way when removing your wheels. If you are having your bike serviced and expect the wheels to be removed, we recommend you alert the technician. Once the wheels are back on, the brackets should be repositioned to insure proper placement and alignment with the LERtape.

Will cleaning my wheels affect the LERtape?

We do not recommend using harsh or abrasive cleaners on your wheels as it may impact the adhesives. There is no way for us to know what chemicals are being used in the many cleaning agents on the market.   We recommend using mild cleaning agents to clean your wheels.  If you do choose to use harsh cleaners, do so at your own risk, and always test a small portion before applying to your whole wheel to see if it impacts the adhesive properties of the LERtape.

If I do not clean my wheels, will it impact performance?

Always keep your wheels, LERtape and LEDs clean to maximize performance and brightness.  The more heavily coated your wheels, LERtape or LEDs are, the more impact it will have on performance and brightness.  Typical thin layers of brake dust should have minimal impact, but we always recommend keeping the components as clean as possible.

Product Information (14)

Does the system require any electronics or batteries on the wheels?

No. That is what is so unique about the patented Lunasee system – there are no LEDs actually on the wheels and no need for any complex system to get power onto a rotating wheel.  Lunasee’s LERtape is a formulated, fast reacting photoluminescent pin stripe that is constantly being charged by the high powered 1W LEDpods that  mount on the frame or fork. So there are no wires, batteries or electronics actually on the wheel – only the thin pin stripe which is virtually weightless.

Does the LERtape/pin stripe come in other widths?

Not at this time.  Many people ask us for wider tape – because they assume the tape we use in our videos is wider than 4mm.  All of the bikes you see in our videos have the same 4mm width material that comes with our kits.  The fact is the 4mm width material LOOKS WIDER when it is glowing at night.  At only 4mm, the tape is narrow enough to be discrete in daylight, yet still highly visible at night.

How long will the LERtape glow when LEDs cut off or I come to a stop?

Technically, the LERtape will glow for hours after being fully charged.  Practically, with some ambient street lighting around, the glow will become unnoticeable after a few minutes.  How long before it is unnoticeable will depend on the amount of ambient light around.  If you are in the city with lots of street light around, this may be a minute or so.  If you are in the countryside with no street lights, it will be several minutes.  Click here to see a our video demonstrating this in dark conditions.

Does the ASL system replace any of my current lighting or reflective components?

No. The system is not intended to replace any of the existing lights or reflective components. The more visible you are – the better!

Is this a reflective material on the wheels?

No. While many people jump to the conclusion that this is just reflective material on the wheel – it is not! While the self-adhesive pin stripe is applied similar to any other wheel/rim pin striping, it’s characteristics are unique.  Lunasee’s LERtape is formulated to have superior photoluminescent performance when paired and excited with the Lunasee’s high powered LEDpods.  This is a patented system, and Lunasee’s LERtape and LEDpods are specifically selected and paired to provide maximum brightness. Unlike reflectors or reflective pin stripes which only reflect when in the direct path of headlights, the LERtape absorbs the energy from the LEDs and EMITS light — making you visible to motorists well before you enter the path of their headlights.  This is particularly effective at making you visible in the periphery and alerting motorists to your presence sooner.

How much power does the system require?

The ASL system requires minimal power – 0.4 amps with a nominal 12V DC power supply.

What does the ASL system do that my reflectors and current lights don’t already do?

Even with required reflective and lighting components, 75% of all accidents involving another vehicle are caused by the driver’s failure to see the motorcycle before the collision, and over 60% of fatalities occur at night.  Clearly, anything to help you be seen will mitigate risk on the road.  The ASL 1000 has two unique benefits.  First, unlike reflectors or reflective components, our system provides ACTIVE light – meaning motorists can see it even when outside the direct path of headlights.  This allows motorists to see you sooner.  Second, if you do have some lighting on your bike visible from the side, most are usually single points of light or strings of lights.  While these may be visible, they often get lost in the sea of lights in the environment, and while they may be visible, motorists may not realize what you are (at least not quickly).  The ASL 1000 creates an easily identifiable and  unique light signature with the rings of light on your wheels, so motorist can not only see you BUT ALSO quickly identify you as a motorcycle.  At 45 mph, you are traveling 66 feet per second.  If we can improve motorists reaction times in seeing and identifying you by only seconds, it can make the difference.

What is the expected life of the LEDs?

Lunasee’s high power 1W LEDs have a stated half-life of 25,000 hours.  Lunasee provides a 1 year limited warranty, however, with proper care and typical usage, the LEDs should last much longer than one year.  To extend life, we always recommend turning the ASL 1000 system off during daylight hours.  Replacement LEDs are available from Lunasee.

What is the expected life of the LERtape?

Lunasee’s LERtape uses high bond automotive grade adhesives.   However, since the LERtape is on a rotating wheel close to the ground, it can come in contact with rocks and/or debris that can scratch the material.  If you experience any damage to your LERtape, you can purchase a replacement roll from Lunasee to replace or repair the damage.   The high performance photoluminescent compounds used in the LERtape are also durable and long lasting (unlike many photoluminescent compounds that will lose their effectiveness with consistent exposure to sunlight).  Lunasee provides a one year limited warranty on the LERtape.

Are components water resistant? Will it work in the rain?

Yes, all components are water resistant.  We do recommend locating the Controller in a location not directly exposed to the elements.  Unlike some other wheel lighting systems, the ASL-1000 will work in rainy conditions.

What colors are available?

The LERtape is a whitish/green color in daylight and glows green at night (the glow color is dictated by the LERtape, not the color of the LEDs).  This is the only color currently available.  In the world of high performance phosphors, the green phosphors are the best performing.  Green is not only the brightest, but the human eye is also most sensitive to green.   Almost all photoluminescent materials designed with safety and visibility in mind are green.  We continue to work to develop other colors, but at this time other colors do not meet our performance criteria for brightness and durability.  If you prefer a color other than green, you can always purchase the green now, and replace the LERtape with another color when available (this should only require replacing the LERtape on your wheels).

Is this lighting system legal in my area?

Regulations vary from state to state and country to country. After our own research, we discovered that interpretation and enforcement of regulations can vary significantly – even among enforcement agencies in the same area. The AMA confirmed the difficulty and complexity in getting clear answers on this. As a result, we leave it to the end user to assess and determine the local regulations and enforcement practices. We have included a separate switch with our kit, so you can always turn the system off if you run into any problems with enforcement officers.  We have sold ASL systems in a variety of states/countries, including NC, VA, PA, NY, CA FL, OH, TX, NJ, NM, Canada – and we are not aware of any enforcement problems among our customers.  We firmly believe that our patented Active Side Lighting provides obvious and significant safety benefits, and that enforcement agencies will recognize this in making enforcement decisions.  Just as the Center High Mount Stop Lamp (CHMSL) on automobiles was once illegal in many places, it is now not only allowed, but required in many countries, including the US & Europe.  In fact, there is already legislation in the EU to approve side lighting technologies (like our ASL system) as a result of the unique improvements to conspicuity for two-wheeled vehicles.
